The career levels are grouped into a number of categories depending on the competence and experience level of the IT Professional. A brief overview is given below.

Apprentice
Undergraduate level trainees belong to this category. New graduates will start their careers at the Associate Software Engineer level.

Software Engineer
Full life cycle experience with software development. Medium skill level in many technology areas and deeper skills in some technologies.

Specialist
Deep skills in many technology areas. Technology specific certifications. Leadership skills.

Consultant
Ability to independently assess client specific issues and recommend solutions. Industry specific knowledge. Client relationship skills.

Expert
Industry technology leader.

The skills and knowledge requirements of a higher category includes the requirements of all the categories below. The higher the category the higher the requirements for technical competence, communication skills, leadership skills, coaching skills, client relationship skills etc.
